The fruit is round or oval, dark red, almost black, with reddish pulp. It has a slightly acidic and pleasant taste, similar to that of the Surinam cherry (Eugenia involucrata). It belongs to the Racemosae section of Eugenia, and is closely related to other tasty fruits of the Atlantic Forest, such as E. pruniformis, E. candolleana, and E. oblongata.
