Garcinia bancana Seeds
Garcinia bancana is a mid-canopy tropical tree reaching up to 37 meters in height, native to Southeast Asia and especially named after the island of Bangka. Found across Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo—including Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, and Kalimantan—it thrives in undisturbed swamp, keranga, and dipterocarp forests up to 1000 meters in elevation, usually in sand/earth left from rivers or floodingalluvial sandy soils. Its glabrous leaves are opposing sideoppositely arranged and penni-veined, while the small greenish-white flowers emerge in originating from the axilaxillary clusters. The fruit, ranging from green to purple when ripe, is a fleshy berry around 26 mm wide, with edible pulp and seeds enclosed in a white specialized outward growth surrounding a seedaril. Though rarely cultivated, its wood is locally used and the fruit is consumed in some regions. It goes by many local names in Borneo, such as Kandis hutan, Perdah, and Tampoi, and is often found as a remnant tree in regenerating forests.
