Melanopsidium nigrum "Purui Sanfona" Seeds

Melanopsidium nigrum is a rare fruit tree from the Atlantic Restinga forests of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, belonging to the Rubiaceae family, related to Alibertia and Cordiera.

A small tree, usually 2–5 m tall, it develops a neat form suitable even for smaller gardens or container cultivation. The bark is smooth, and the tree grows quickly under warm, sunny conditions.

The fruits are large, spherical; globe shapedglobose, and ribbed when green, becoming smoother and turning dark brown at maturity. They can reach up to 6–8 cm in diameter, making them strikingly ornamental. Inside, the creamy white pulp is juicy and pleasantly acid-sweet, with a taste reminiscent of jenipapo (Genipa americana) and puruí (Alibertia edulis). The flavor is refreshing, aromatic, and highly distinctive among native Brazilian fruits.

Fruit production occurs twice a year, from January to March and again from August to October. The tree is easy to grow, showing fast growth, adaptability, and tolerance to light frosts (down to –1 °C / 30 °F). For reliable fruit set, at least three seedlings are recommended, as the species is likely male and female reproductive organs in separate individuals - you need 2 (male and female) for fruitdioecious (separate male and female trees).

With its combination of unique flavor, showy ribbed fruits, and ornamental value, Melanopsidium nigrum is a true collector’s gem among Brazil’s rarest native fruit trees
