Bouea macrophylla

A large, evergreen tree with very dense foliage, growing up to 27 meters tall. The the trunk of a treebole can be 55cm in diameter. The fruit is very popular in parts of southeastern Asia and shows promise for greater commercial production. An attractive tree that provides excellent shade, it is widely cultivated for its fruit and as an ornamental in some areas of Thailand, Sumatra, Java and Borneo.

The ripe fruit is eaten fresh out-of-hand, usually only the pulp but sometimes the pulp and skin together (owing to the skin being thin and edible). The pulp has a flavor and texture similar to a quality mango, with a sweet to mildly sourish taste and a soft, slightly fibrous and juicy texture.

Chutneys are made following mango chutney recipes and sambals (spicy Asian condiments) using green or unripe fruit.
