Duguetia echinophora

Duguetia echinophora, commonly known as ameju, atameju, or ameiju, is a rare and prized fruit tree native to the Maranhão region in northeastern Brazil. A member of the Annonaceae family, this evergreen tree grows to heights of 5–10 meters and thrives in well-drained sandy soils. Its distinctive fruits are green when young and turn red and spiky upon ripening, revealing a fiberless orange pulp. The flavor is a delightful fusion of sugar apple (Annona squamosa), cantaloupe, and hints of carrot and cinnamon, making it a unique culinary experience.
