Eugenia melanogyna "Piúna" Seeds

Eugenia melanogyna, commonly known as "Piúna," is a tree that grows 8 to 20 meters tall and has a grayish-brown trunk measuring 30 to 50 cm in diameter. The bark is whitish to yellowish, flaking, and thick, and the stems are tortuous. The leaves are one main leaf - not compoundsimple, opposing sideopposite, wider at the base than at the midpoint; tapering toward apex. Length:Width ratio of 2:1ovate or oblong, and have a cardaceous texture, measuring 6 to 12 cm long by 2.5 to 5 cm wide, with an acute base. The flowers are born in umbels, with 1 to 4 whitish cream-colored flowers.

The oblong fruits are monospermic and measure 1.5 to 3 cm in length, with black pulp and a taste of syrup. The tree fruits from May to July, and the fruits can be consumed in nature or in the form of juices and jelly. The tree has hardwood and is useful in permanent revegetation projects, as its fruits feed many animals.
