Eugenia sp. "Batingão" Seeds
Eugenia sp. "Batingão" is a rare and remarkable species recently discovered in Una, Bahia, Brazil, growing in sandy clay soils and reaching impressive heights of up to 18 meters (59–60 feet). Though capable of becoming a towering tree in open ground, it also shows excellent potential for container cultivation or being pruned to a manageable size, making it suitable for both collectors and home growers.
What truly sets Batingão apart is its phenomenal fruit production. The tree yields abundant, large fruits—among the largest in the genus—with a smooth, shiny green skin when fully ripe and a size just under a golf ball. The bright yellow pulp is firm, slightly juicy, and intensely sweet, offering a 70/30 pulp-to-seed ratio, which is exceptional for Eugenia. Though the skin is tingly, drying sensationastringent and not recommended for fresh eating, the flesh is rich and flavorful, making it a standout for culinary use.
With its combination of beauty, productivity, and superior fruit quality, Eugenia sp. "Batingão" is a unique and highly promising species for rare fruit cultivation, especially suited to both tropical gardens and container culture.
If you like Eugenia sp. "Batingão", you might also like Eugenia sp. "Cafezinho" or Eugenia sp. "Bahianinha"
