Eugenia sp. “Tangerine” is a rare and intriguing fruit tree from the Restinga forests of northern Espírito Santo, Brazil. This small to medium-sized species features a smooth, peeling trunk reminiscent of jaboticaba trees, and a dense canopy of a treecrown that makes it an attractive choice for both gardens and container culture.
Its fruits are small, flattened (oblate) in shape, canopy of a treecrowned by persistent sepals and covered with a bright orange rind. The fruit’s surface is dotted with tiny oil glands, closely resembling the skin of a true tangerine, which inspired its popular name. The pulp is sweet and pleasant, with a flavor considered good by local collectors, though the species remains poorly known and is still under taxonomic study.
Thriving in sandy, well-drained soils of coastal habitats, this species is naturally adapted to wind, sun, and likely shows some tolerance to cold. Its fruits are not only attractive for collectors but also highly valued by wildlife, and they hold potential for use in juices, jams, and other preparations. With its ornamental character, resilience, and ecological role, Eugenia sp. “Tangerine” represents an exciting addition for serious Eugenia enthusiasts, tropical fruit collections, and biodiversity restoration projects.
