Garcinia amaralae Seeds
Garcinia amaralae is a recently described species of the Clusiaceae family, native to the Western Amazon and distributed in Brazil (Acre, Amazonas, Rondônia) and Colombia. It is a small to medium-sized tree, reaching up to 10 meters tall, with smooth, subcylindrical branches and a yellow exudate. The leaves are obwider at the base than at the midpoint; tapering toward apex. Length:Width ratio of 2:1ovate-elliptic to wider at the base than at the midpoint; tapering toward apex. Length:Width ratio of 2:1ovate, glossy on the upper side, and marked with abundant resin canals on the underside. Male flowers are originating from the axilaxillary and fasciculate, with 25 male reproductive organstamens arranged in three whorls—a key trait distinguishing it from similar species such as G. floribunda and G. madruno. The fruit is a muricate (rough-warty) yellow resembling an eggovoid berry with persistent floral parts and typically contains two large seeds. The fruit contains flavorful pulp similar to other Garinias of this region. Found in both terra firme and várzea habitats, G. amaralae adds to the growing diversity of Amazonian Garcinia, offering future potential for conservation, ethnobotanical research, and possibly edible fruit evaluation.
