Myrcianthes pungens "Guabiju" Seeds
Myrcianthes pungens, commonly known as Guabiju, is a medium to large tree native to the Atlantic Forest, Pampa, and Chaco regions of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It typically grows 5 to 15 meters tall, featuring dense, dark green foliage and a strong, resilient structure, making it well-suited for both ornamental and agroforestry purposes.
The tree produces small, dark purple to black fruits with a thick skin and juicy, sweet pulp, often compared to blueberries and jaboticabas. The fruit is highly valued for fresh consumption, as well as for making juices, jams, and liqueurs. Guabiju is known for its high nutritional content, particularly its antioxidants and vitamin C. It is also highly resistant to drought and cold, tolerating temperatures as low as -5°C, making it an excellent fruiting species for diverse climates.
