Neomitranthes obscura "Pitanga da Restinga"

Neomitranthes obscura, also known as Pitanga da Restinga, is a small tree that grows in sandbanks and rainforests on the Atlantic coast of Brazil. The tree has glossy leaves and multicolored, sweet fruits that are canopy of a treecrowned with a small floral structure called a hoodlike structurecalyptra.

These fruits are consumed raw and are appreciated in their region of origin, and are also used to combat diarrhea due to their high levels of astringent organic compound commonly found in the skin of certain fruitstannin. The tree is easy to grow in full sun and well-drained soil.
