Plinia sp. "Malacacheta" is a rare and distinctive jaboticaba variety discovered inthe wild near Malacacheta, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2010. Initially cultivated by a small group of Brazilian collectors, this unique tree was introduced to the United States around 2018. The tree features a dense, spherical; globe shapedglobose canopy of a treecrown with leaves typically under 8 cm, and it flushes new growth consistently, adding to its ornamental appeal.
The 2 cm spherical; globe shapedglobose fruits are a standout feature, with a velvety-textured skin, a unique greenish-bronze striped pattern running from north to south, and an exceptionally sweet flavor. These fruits are highly prized for fresh consumption and are occasionally cultivated in domestic orchards in the region of origin. Botanists suggest that Malacacheta is significantly distinct from other Plinia species and may eventually be formally described as its own species.
Its small, fuzzy fruits hint at a close relation to Plinia sp. Peluda do Mucuri and Plinia sp. Sapuca, yet its unique traits set it apart, making it a treasured addition to jaboticaba collections.
