Quaribea cordata Seeds
Quararibea cordata, commonly known as the South American zapote or chupa-chupa, is a tropical fruit tree native to the Amazon basin, particularly found in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. This medium to large-sized tree can reach heights of up to 15–20 meters, with a straight trunk and dense canopy of large, glossy, cordate (heart-shaped) leaves, which give the species its name.
The fruit is a standout feature, with a round to oval shape, orange to brownish skin, and a velvety texture. Inside, the pulp is soft, orange, and juicy, with a sweet and slightly tangy flavor reminiscent of mangoes and cantaloupe. The fruit is highly prized for fresh consumption and is often eaten by sucking the pulp, as suggested by its name "chupa-chupa."
This species thrives in lowland tropical rainforests, requiring well-drained, fertile soils and a warm, humid climate. Apart from its delicious fruit, Quararibea cordata is valued for its ornamental appeal and ecological importance, supporting pollinators and wildlife in its native habitat.
