Spondias venulosa, commonly known as "Caja Grande", is a tall, semi-drops leaves annuallydeciduous fruit tree native to the rainforests of Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador, typically found near rivers and in sand/earth left from rivers or floodingalluvial plains. Reaching heights of 12–18 meters, it forms a rounded canopy of a treecrown with pendulous branches and has a straight, cylindrical trunk up to 60 cm in diameter, covered in slightly corky bark.
Though occasionally cultivated, it is more commonly wild-harvested for its edible fruits, which are a valued part of local diets. The fruit is a green to yellow a fleshy fruit with thin skin and a central stone containing the seeddrupe, often over 5 cm long, with a juicy, fibrous pulp that is both acidic and sweet. It is commonly eaten fresh or processed into refreshing juices, making it a cherished resource in its native range. Despite its underutilization, Caja Grande has strong potential for expanded cultivation and agroforestry use in tropical regions.
